Christiana, PA, is a borough in eastern Lancaster County with a population of around 1,100. Christiana covers about .53 square miles of land.
Christiana is named after Christiana Noble, the wife of a first settler.
Leola has the smallest population of the boroughs in Lancaster County. It is served by the Octorara Area School District.
Although Christiana is small, it has a big history. A famous “fight for freedom” took place in Christiana in 1851. The Battle of Christiana, or the Christiana Riot, took place in Christiana. In this riot, local residents defended four fugitive slaves and killed the slave owner, Edward Gorsuch. The Southerners demanded justice, but the first defendant was acquitted, and the government dropped the rest of the cases. This trial became one of the first trials to challenge the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
