Parkesburg, PA, is a borough in Chester County (southeast Pennsylvania) with a population of 3,866. Parkesburg covers a total of 1.2 square miles of land.
Parkesburg is named after the politician John G. Parke. The town began as a tavern called the Fountain Inn around 1734. Later, the inn became the Parkesburg post office. The inn-turned-post-office is still standing today and is a private residence.
In the 1830s, the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad ran through Parkesburg. Parkesburg became the location for railroad repair shops and roundhouses. The railroad shops were moved elsewhere when Philadelphia & Columbia was sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad.
But there was more to come for those empty railroad shops. In 1872, Horace A. Beale moved his Iron Company into the old railroad shops, calling it Parkesburg Iron Company. This company became known worldwide for its quality charcoal iron boiler tubes used in steam engines. It employed hundreds of men and positively impacted the surrounding economy for years to come.
